ChatGPT Work

ChatGPT - What is Chat, Work, Codex and Sites

ChatGPT can now help you think, finish the work, build the technical parts and turn the result into something interactive. Here is what each option does and when to use it.

Back to resources

Until now, most people used ChatGPT to ask questions, generate ideas or draft individual pieces of work.

ChatGPT Work changes that.

It is an agent inside ChatGPT designed to take on larger projects that require context, planning and several connected steps. Instead of giving you one part of the answer, it can gather the information it needs, propose an approach and work towards a finished output you can review, refine and use.

That output could be a document, presentation, spreadsheet, report, dashboard or working Site. This is the clearest shift yet from using ChatGPT as a chatbot to using it as part of how you work.

What Is ChatGPT Work?

ChatGPT Work brings longer, outcome-focused work into ChatGPT. You give it the goal, the relevant context and the result you need. It can then research, analyse, plan and create a finished deliverable.

Work is powered by the GPT-5.6 model series: Sol, Terra and Luna. These models are designed for professional work involving ambiguity, changing information and more than one step.

It is also better able to follow existing formats and templates. You could provide a previous company presentation, brand guide, monthly report or proposal and ask Work to create the next version in the same structure.

You still need to review the result, but you no longer need to rebuild the document from the beginning.

Chat, Work Or Codex?

Use Chat for conversation

Choose Chat when you want to ask a question, search, brainstorm, explore an idea or work through something conversationally.

Use Work for a finished outcome

Choose Work when you have a larger outcome that requires research, files, connected tools or several stages of execution.

Use Codex for software development

Choose Codex for technical work such as building software, editing code, fixing bugs, running tests and working inside a codebase.

You might begin with an idea in Chat, develop it into a project in Work and use Codex if the project becomes technical.

What Is Sites?

Sites lets ChatGPT turn an idea, plan or set of information into an interactive website or web app.

Instead of finishing with a static document or a long conversation, you can ask ChatGPT to create something people can explore and use. That could be a dashboard, project tracker, calculator, launch calendar, internal tool, interactive report, prototype or resource hub.

For example, you could give Work a collection of research and ask Sites to turn it into a searchable resource library with filters, categories and a clear summary of the findings.

Sites is useful when the information needs to be more than read. It gives people a way to search it, change inputs, explore options or return to an updated version over time.

A simple way to think about the four options is:

  • Chat helps you think and explore.
  • Work gathers context and creates the finished deliverable.
  • Codex handles software development and technical implementation.
  • Sites turns information into an interactive, shareable experience.

What Makes Work Different From Chat?

The difference is not simply that Work writes longer answers. It is designed to handle more of the project.

A normal chat might help you brainstorm a campaign, draft some copy, suggest a presentation structure or explain a spreadsheet formula.

Work can gather information from approved sources, review relevant files and tools, identify missing information, create a plan, work through connected stages, produce a polished output and revise it after your review.

The shift is from asking, “Can you help me with this?” to giving it an outcome: “Here is what I need finished.”

Work Can Use Your Existing Context

Work can gather information from the files, apps and plugins you approve. That can include documents, email, spreadsheets, project information and other business tools.

For example:

Review the campaign brief in my files, find the latest performance results in the connected spreadsheet and create a presentation explaining what worked, what did not and what we should change next month.

OpenAI says more than 1,400 plugins are available, although what you can install or use depends on your plan, workspace, role, region and administrator settings.

Desktop Work can use local files and desktop apps with your permission. Cloud Work on web and mobile cannot directly access files stored on your computer.

You Stay Involved In The Process

Work is not designed to disappear with a vague instruction and make every decision for you.

For larger projects, Plan mode can gather the available context, ask questions and propose a step-by-step approach before work begins. You can correct assumptions, change the direction and approve the plan.

This is particularly useful when a project contains sensitive information, several approaches could work, the output must follow company requirements, external tools are involved or a wrong assumption would affect the entire result.

The quality of the finished work still depends on the context, access and direction you provide.
