Claude Chat, Cowork, Code and Design
What is the difference between Claude Chat, Claude Cowork, Claude Code and Claude Design? Four products. Four different use cases. And they are most powerful when you use them together.

The easiest way to understand the difference is this: Chat is for thinking. Cowork is for doing. Code is for building software. Design is for creating visual work.
Type 1
Claude Chat
Claude Chat is the chatbot.
Where to access it: Claude Chat is available on the web and in the Claude desktop app.
Use it for writing, brainstorming, working through problems, drafting documents and asking quick questions. If you are new to Claude, start here.
Claude Chat is the browser version. It is great for thinking through ideas and getting fast help, but it has limits. You can only upload so many files, and in a long session the conversation can start to lose track.
Use Chat when the task is mostly about thinking, writing or clarifying.
Type 2
Claude Cowork
Claude Cowork goes further.
Where to access it: Claude Cowork is only available in the Claude desktop app.
It connects directly to your computer, and a Chrome extension can give it direct access to your browser. Instead of copying and pasting output, you can delegate the work.
You give it a goal, it builds the plan and executes it. It can work across entire folders, not just a handful of uploaded files.
Use Cowork for managing emails, organising files, scheduling tasks and doing work across your actual workspace.
Type 3
Claude Code
Claude Code is a coding agent.
Where to access it: Claude Code is available on the web and in the desktop app.
It writes, tests and fixes code on its own. Websites, apps, automations, browser extensions - you describe what you want in plain English and it builds it.
You do not need to know how to code to use it well. You need to be clear about what you want built, what should happen when it works, and what you want changed when it does not.
Type 4
Claude Design
Claude Design is your creative partner.
Where to access it: Claude Design is only available on the web.
Use it for pitch decks, mock-ups, 3D designs, app interfaces and visual concepts. Describe what you want, and it creates it.
This is useful when you need to move from an idea to something you can see quickly.
How To Use Them Together
Each version has a different job.
- Use Claude Chat to think through the idea.
- Use Claude Cowork to execute work across files, browser tasks and your workspace.
- Use Claude Code to build software, automations and technical systems.
- Use Claude Design to create the visual version of the idea.
If you only use Claude Chat, you are mostly using Claude as a thinking partner. When you add Cowork, Code and Design, Claude starts becoming part of how the work actually gets done.
Final Thought
Chat is for thinking. Cowork is for doing.
Code is for building. Design is for creating.
